The National Defense University, or NDU, is a government-sponsored military university based in Islamabad, Pakistan devoted to the military, geostrategic, and international relations study, research, and development.
Founded as a staff college in 1970, it was awarded university status in 2007 and co-funded by the Commission of Education and the Ministry of Defence. The NDU offers integral and vital learning in the development of defense policy and an awareness of national security for Pakistan’s combined military leadership. Chartered Chancellor of Pakistan and Joint Staff Chiefs, Lieutenant General Muhammad Saeed is its current President.
The objective of the university is to provide higher education in the formation of policy and strategy at all levels, with a focus on national security and defense, and to serve as a national think tank.
University must be controlled by Parliament’s Act.
The NDU was formed in 1963 by the First Army War Course at the Command and Staff College, Quetta. The National Defense College was subsequently created in 1971 at the ancient premises of the National Assembly of Pakistan in Rawalpindi. The National Defense College moved to its current location in Margalla, Islamabad, in 1995.
The National Defense College was rehabilitated as the National Defense University by the decision of the Government of Pakistan. In order to this effect was signed by the President of Pakistan on 27 January 2007.
The origins of the University of National Defense date back to 1963 when the 1st Army War Class began at Command & Staff College in Quetta. The National Defense College was subsequently created in 1971 at the ancient premises of the National Assembly of Pakistan in Rawalpindi. The National Defense College moved to its current location at the foot of the Margalla, Islamabad, in 1995. The NDU is located on the same campus.
Course and Curriculum
The NDU curriculum consisted of two courses between 1972 and 2009: a War Course focusing on pure military strategy and a wider NDU course dealing with strategic and socio-economic questions. In 2010, both courses were integrated annually in the 48 weeks National Security and War Course (NSWC). The course begins in August and finishes in June. Officials from friendly nations (such as Nigeria, Malaysia, Jordan) have also taken National Defense University classes since 1988. So far, 3061 people have graduated from the University of National Defence. This comprises 469 officers from 39 friendly nations and 570 workshop attendees. Today, the NDU trains all of the military leadership and civil leadership. An officer cannot become general unless he is an NDU graduate.

The National Defense University ISSRA
MAJOR GENERAL ASIF ALI, HILAL-E-IMTIAZ, General Commander of the Pakistan Army was commissioned in 1987. He graduated from Quetta Command and Staff College, Islamabad National Defense University, and China National Defense University. The General has held many commands, staff, and appointments for instruction. He stayed on the educational side at Command and Staff College Quetta and Artillery School.
He remained Chief of Staff of the Army Strategic Forces Command, among other duties. He also served as a Kuwait Observer Mission Military Observer in Iraq. He has been commanded by the Artillery Regiment. A Mujahid Infantry Battalion, the Artillery Division, and an Infantry Brigade in South Waziristan, alongside the war of terror. The General possesses a Master in War Studies, a Master of Strategic Studies, and a Master of Military Science and Management, and a Master of Military Science in China.
He now has a Ph.D. in Peace and Conflict Studies. He remains the Commander School of Artillery and is the Commander of a Strategic Division. He now serves as Director-General of Strategic Studies Research and Analysis at the University of National Defence.

The National Defense University Library of Sahibzada Yaqub Khan (SYK)
Founded in 1970, Islamabad National Defense University Library has evolved and developed tremendously throughout the years. Today, it is one of the well-organized academic study books of the defense institutes and the capital. The collection includes a mixture of books, research papers, journals, newspaper clippings, and digital resources. The library has 96 000 volumes, trade journals, and other resources, covering military history, defense and security studies, nuclear studies, international relations, studies of peace and conflicts, governance and public policy, economies, politics, international relations, Pakistan, Islam, etc. The books are categorized according to Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme (DDC).
